Lake Como Engagement Photographer & Videographer: A Cinematic Session in Lenno & Bellagio

When planning an engagement session in Lake Como, most couples envision endless Italian sunshine. But when we met Jen and Ice in Lenno, the sky had other plans.

As a Lake Como engagement photographer and videographer team, we don’t run from the elements—we lean into them. The heavy, overcast skies and quiet rain transformed the usually crowded shores of Bellagio into an intimate, deeply nostalgic setting. It was the perfect backdrop for our signature cinematic, analog-inspired style, focusing entirely on raw emotion, heavy atmosphere, and soulful storytelling.

The Logistics: Framing a 2-Day Engagement Session in Italy

Capturing the true essence of this region requires a slow, intentional pace. To give Jen and Ice space to breathe and simply exist together without feeling rushed, we split this pre-wedding experience across two distinct locations:

1. Lenno & Private Boat Cruise

Lenno sets a quiet, deeply atmospheric tone away from the main tourist hubs. Pairing the shores of this traditional village with a private wooden boat cruise allowed us to capture raw, kinetic motion on the open water. The mist rising from the lake, the vintage wood of the boat, and the overcast sky created a nostalgic, cinematic mood that feels entirely unscripted and full of life.

2. Bellagio & Villa del Balbianello

For the next phase of the session, we brought together two of Lake Como's most breathtaking landscapes. The grand historic architecture, ivy-covered loggias, and dramatic terraced gardens of Villa del Balbianello offered a timeless canvas for editorial frames. We balanced this grand scale by exploring the empty, rain-slicked cobblestone alleyways of Bellagio, adding an intimate touch of retro European romance to the gallery.

A Moody Evening in Lenno

Our story began in Lenno.

September is often considered one of the best times to visit Lake Como. The summer crowds begin to ease, temperatures remain comfortable, and the atmosphere around the lake feels slightly slower.

That evening, however, sunshine was nowhere to be found.

Dark clouds settled over the mountains and the lake reflected soft shades of grey and silver instead of its usual bright blues.

Yet there was something beautiful about it.

Without dramatic sunlight competing for attention, the focus naturally shifted to the couple and the experience itself.

Jen and Ice wandered through the waterfront streets, laughed through the uncertainty of the forecast, and treated the evening exactly as it was: a chance to enjoy being together in Italy.

Champagne on a Traditional Wooden Boat

As the evening continued, we boarded a traditional wooden boat.

Few experiences feel more connected to Lake Como than being out on the water.

From the lake, the landscape feels completely different. Villas emerge along the shoreline. Small villages appear between the mountains. The scale of the surrounding scenery becomes much more apparent.

Jen and Ice settled into the experience immediately.

A bottle of champagne accompanied the cruise, turning it into something closer to a date night than a photoshoot.

They talked, laughed, watched the shoreline pass by, and simply enjoyed being there together.

The cloudy sky remained overhead, but instead of taking away from the experience, it created a calm and intimate atmosphere across the lake.

The evening ended quietly.

But the story wasn't finished.

Bellagio, Umbrella, and a Morning That Couldn't Decide

The following morning, we met again in Bellagio.

For a brief moment, it looked like the weather might cooperate.

Then it rained.

Then it stopped.

Then it rained again.

The weather spent the morning changing its mind.

Fortunately, Jen and Ice found the whole situation entertaining.

Umbrellas became part of the session almost immediately. Small alleyways offered temporary shelter before the rain moved on again. Reflections appeared across the cobblestone streets as people hurried through town.

Instead of hiding from the weather, they leaned into it.

They danced together in quiet corners of Bellagio, laughed every time the rain returned, and turned what could have been a frustrating morning into one of the most enjoyable parts of the session.

Some of our favourite photographs from Lake Como happen in conditions like these.

Not because the weather is perfect.

But because people stop worrying about perfection.

Gelato Makes Everything Better

At some point, we decided there was only one reasonable response to unpredictable weather.

Gelato.

So we stopped.

Rain or not.

Jen and Ice sat together enjoying gelato while watching umbrellas pass by along the streets of Bellagio.

It wasn't a grand location.

It wasn't one of Lake Como's famous viewpoints.

Yet it became one of those small moments that felt completely true to the experience.

The kind of memory couples often remember long after the trip itself.

Villa del Balbianello and the Rain We Couldn't Escape

Our final destination was Villa del Balbianello.

For many couples planning a Lake Como engagement session or Lake Como elopement, it sits at the top of the list.

And for good reason.

The villa offers beautiful gardens, historic architecture, and incredible views across the lake.

When we arrived, the weather still seemed manageable.

A few minutes later, it wasn't.

The rain became heavier.

Then heavier again.

Eventually, it turned into a proper downpour.

The sensible option would have been to stop.

Jen and Ice weren't interested in sensible.

Instead, they embraced it.

They walked through the rain, laughed through it, and continued exploring while becoming increasingly soaked.

By that point, the weather had become part of the story.

There was no point fighting it.

The rain added movement to the gardens, deepened the colours of the landscape, and created a completely different atmosphere from what we originally imagined.

More importantly, it reflected exactly who they were as a couple.

Fun.

Playful.

Open to whatever came next.

Insider Guide: Insider Tips for Planning Your Lake Como Session

Because we photograph and film in this region frequently, we know that executing a flawless session requires understanding local logistics. Here is what you need to know about permits, timing, and transport:

🏛️ Villa del Balbianello Photography Permits

Planning a session at Villa del Balbianello requires advanced coordination. To shoot professional engagement photos or video on the grounds, a commercial permit fee is required, which varies depending on whether you book during public hours or request private access. We handle the permit logistics and scheduling for all our couples to ensure a seamless, stress-free experience without any unexpected interruptions from villa staff.

⏱️ The Best Time of Day to Shoot in Bellagio

Because Bellagio is one of the most famous towns on the lake, the narrow stone stairways fill up with travelers by mid-morning. For the quiet, intimate, cinematic frames we love to capture, we highly recommend a sunrise session. The morning light hitting the water creates a soft, ethereal glow, and you’ll have the iconic viewpoints entirely to yourselves.

🛥️ Navigating the Lake: Water Taxis vs. Ferries

Moving between Lenno and Bellagio during a two-day or split-session requires strategic planning. While the public ferry system is cost-effective, it operates on a rigid schedule that can eat into prime lighting windows. For a truly seamless experience—and an incredible opportunity for motion video frames—we recommend renting a private wooden Cantiere Ernesto Riva water taxi for at least one hour of your session.

Our Approach as a Lake Como Engagement Photographer & Videographer Duo

While Jen and Ice’s specific gallery below focuses on the quiet frames of our film-style photography, our studio operates entirely as an integrated photo and cinema team.

When documenting an engagement session or an intimate elopement in logistically challenging areas like Villa del Balbianello or the narrow passages of Bellagio, having a unified team is essential. We don’t run two competing productions. Clovis captures the motion, the ambient soundscapes of the rain, and the slow-paced movement, while Theeda utilizes the exact same directional light for stills.

The result is a single, cohesive visual legacy where your final film and your photographs share the exact same rich, retro tones and documentary pacing.
