We photographed Shannon and Dean's wedding at Château du Raysse, a privately owned medieval château tucked away in the heart of the Dordogne countryside. Throughout this story, we're sharing not only their wedding day but also practical tips for couples considering getting married in Dordogne.

Why Choose Dordogne for Your Wedding?

While many international couples immediately think of Provence or the French Riviera, Dordogne offers something completely different. The pace is slower, the landscapes are greener, and the atmosphere feels wonderfully authentic.

It's one of our favourite regions in France for intimate weddings because it offers:

  • Beautiful château venues surrounded by nature

  • Less crowded settings than many of France's more famous destinations

  • Exceptional food and local wines

  • Charming medieval villages full of character

  • Long summer evenings perfect for outdoor celebrations

  • Private estates where guests can stay together for an entire wedding weekend

If you're looking for a destination that feels elegant without being overly formal, Dordogne is difficult to beat.

As a France-based Dordogne wedding photographer and videographer team, we've documented several weddings at Château du Raysse, and every visit reminds us why couples fall in love with this place.

Dating back to the 12th century, the château sits within 20 acres of peaceful countryside in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Between its circular medieval tower, honey-coloured limestone walls, beautiful courtyards, and two swimming pools, it feels far more like a private historic home than a traditional wedding venue.

The estate accommodates up to 38 guests across 17 en-suite bedrooms, making it perfect for couples travelling from overseas who want to spend several days celebrating with their closest family and friends instead of squeezing everything into a single afternoon.

Shannon and Dean's late-May wedding embraced exactly that spirit. Rather than following a rigid timeline, they created an unforgettable weekend centred around good company, genuine moments, and one incredible surprise.

Relaxed Wedding Morning

One of the biggest advantages of hosting a destination wedding at a private château is that nothing ever feels rushed.

The morning unfolded at its own gentle pace, giving everyone time to simply enjoy the estate before the celebrations began.

Over in the groom's quarters, Dean and his groomsmen kept things wonderfully simple. There was no frantic schedule—just laughter, stories, and a quiet excitement building throughout the morning. Just before heading to the ceremony, they gathered together for one final toast, raising personalised flasks and stepping out to the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Shannon spent the morning getting ready inside the château's beautifully preserved historic rooms, where soft natural light poured through the old windows.

The most emotional moment came when she shared a private first look with her dad. There was nothing staged about it—just a quiet, deeply personal moment that filled the room with tears before anyone had even walked down the aisle.

Wedding Ceremony at the Château

Late May brought glorious sunshine to Dordogne, with temperatures climbing far beyond what most people expect from spring.

Rather than hiding from the heat, Shannon and Dean embraced it completely.

They chose the château's beautiful stone archway for their symbolic ceremony, surrounded by lush gardens and centuries-old stone walls.

Under the bright French sun, they exchanged deeply personal vows while family and friends looked on with tears, laughter, and enormous smiles. Sometimes the simplest ceremony settings become the most memorable, especially when the focus stays exactly where it belongs—on the people standing in front of one another.

Outdoor Wedding Reception in the Dordogne Countryside

As the afternoon slowly softened into evening, everyone gathered in the Maison garden for dinner beneath the open sky.

This is one of the reasons couples are drawn to getting married in Dordogne. Outdoor receptions here feel wonderfully relaxed. Long banquet tables stretch beneath the trees, glasses clink throughout the evening, and conversations continue long after dessert arrives.

The speeches perfectly reflected Shannon and Dean's personalities—equal parts hilarious and heartfelt. Guests laughed until they cried before wiping away actual tears during stories that celebrated years of friendship and family.

Watching the sun slowly disappear over the surrounding countryside made it impossible not to understand why so many couples choose this part of France for their wedding weekend.

The Surprise: Singing Waiters Steal the Show

Just when everyone thought the evening had settled into a relaxed dinner party, Shannon unveiled the surprise she had secretly planned for months.

Without Dean knowing, she had hired professional singing waiters.

For hours they blended seamlessly with the catering team, clearing plates and topping up wine glasses without raising a single suspicion.

Then one waiter suddenly fell dramatically in the middle of the courtyard.

The entire dinner stopped.

For a few seconds, everyone genuinely believed something terrible had happened.

Then she stood up, pulled a microphone from her pocket, and burst into song.

Within moments the courtyard transformed from complete silence into one enormous singalong. Guests jumped to their feet, dancing between the tables while the evening shifted from elegant dinner party to full-blown festival long before sunset had faded.

Sunset Portraits Around Château du Raysse

Having photographed multiple weddings at Château du Raysse, we already knew exactly how the evening light would move across the old stone walls.

Instead of rushing through portraits, we simply took Shannon and Dean for a quiet walk around the estate.

Those twenty peaceful minutes became one of the few chances they had to slow down, talk together, and absorb everything that had happened throughout the day.

As photographers, those are often our favourite moments—not because we're directing anything, but because couples finally have space to simply be together.

The session ended beside one of the château's swimming pools.

Rather than aiming for perfectly polished wedding portraits, Shannon kicked off her shoes and dipped her feet into the cool water while holding a glass of champagne. Dean collapsed onto a daybed with a bright pink flamingo float, completely embracing the relaxed atmosphere that had defined the entire celebration.

It couldn't have suited them better.

A Wild Night in Dordogne

The energy from the singing waiters carried straight onto the dance floor.

Once darkness arrived, the château's reception hall became a sea of dancing, singing, and celebration.

There were no formal traditions left to tick off—just a room full of people making the absolute most of a warm French summer night together.

Shannon and Dean's wedding proved that a French château wedding doesn't have to feel formal or traditional. It can be emotional, wildly fun, beautifully relaxed, and completely true to who you are.
